Ross Swartzendruber is 55 and lives on the family sheep farm with his wife and three children in rural Polk County. He is very active in his community and has owned an advertising agency for 20 years.
Straub Middle School Music Booster President (2015)
Ross volunteers at his children’s school as president of the music boosters. Elected by fellow parents, he led fundraising efforts which raised $75,000 over five years to help choir, orchestra and band programs grow to include two-thirds of the Straub student body.
Bethel College Board, Inc. Director (2016)
Bethel College was chartered by the Oregon State Legislature in 1855 as one of the state’s earliest colleges. After merging with the Monmouth College in 1861, Bethel College became part of what is now Western Oregon University. Area neighbors formed the nonprofit Bethel College Board, Inc. in 1983 to administer the $100,000 budget for preservation of the property. Ross was elected Board Director by neighbors and high school classmates in 2016.
Music Lessons Project Board Member (2018)
The Music Lessons Project offers private music lessons to students in Salem-Keizer Public Schools Title I programs. As a founding member, Ross helped raise more than $100,000 for lessons in five middle schools and two high schools. Ross was elected as Board Director by business owners for his experience in event production.
Oregon Public Education Network member (2018)
Oregon Public Education Network advocates for increasing opportunity in Oregon public schools. Ross joined the group while participating in the Joint Interim Committee on Student Success policy development process. A staunch proponent of public education, Ross continues to advocate for students at school board, State Board of Education and legislative meetings.
Polk County Democratic Precinct Committee Person (2018)
Ross was elected by fellow Democrats as Precinct Committee Person for Precinct 102 in rural Polk County, which stretched from Ballston to the Willamette River. He regularly represents Democrats at monthly county Central Committee and quarterly State Central Committee meetings.
Democratic Party of Oregon State Central Committee Education Caucus Delegate (2019)
The Democratic Party of Oregon State Central Committee Education Caucus evaluates education efforts in Oregon. A member since 2016, Ross was elected by Caucus members as Delegate to the State Central Committee in 2019.
