Garfield Elementary School, located in the downtown business section of Salem, was completed in 1910. It was named for James A.Garfield who was the 20th President of the United States. Garfield is one of the oldest buildings currently being used, but is in excellent repair. A unique factor concerning this building is that since its erection it has had only three principals. The late, Miss Margaret Cosper was the first, ending her career in 1935. Mrs. May R. Smith was the second, retiring in 1955. Mrs. Edna Fery Schmitz has been principal since that time.
